Everlong Video Analaysis

Everlong

Everlong is a song written by the Foo Fighters a band that has grown more and more popular with each album release to the point where people recognize some songs yethave no familiarity with the band. Everlong is a very popular song amongst fans of the Foo Fighters; the song was released as part of the album “The Colour and the Shape”.

The Video features Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins posing as a happily married couple along with Nate Mendel and Pat Smear playing the part as two villains dressed as teddy boys. Dave plays as the man and Taylor dressed in drag is posing as the woman. The video represents mostly a plot-based storyline with several references to films and celebrities e.g. The Evil Dead, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen; the video is also a good representation of the bands personality and humor; they don’t so much like to be serious in their videos.

The video starts with the two villains approaching a house where Dave and Taylor lie in bed sleeping before the viewers enter the characters dreams into their dreams. The dreams are filmed in saturated colours where as the “reality” is filmed in black and white; this is unusual as in most editing it would be done the other way, however this helps the viewers differentiate between the dreams and reality scenes.
In Dave’s dream we see him at what appears to be a house party dressed as a punk, Dave’s dream shows aggression that we would expect to see in a rock video this is shown by his encounter with the two ill-intentioned teddy boys (Pat and Nate) bullying his “girlfriend”, Dave then becomes enraged, forcing his hand to swell to an enormous size using it to beat up the two villains, this is timed so that the physical violence is in time with the chorus demonstrating emotion as well as displaying humor.

The Video the transits over to Taylor’s dream where we see “her” in a log cabin deep in the forest whilst Dave is out collecting fire wood. The villains from Dave’s dream cross over into Taylors dream and start trying to attack the house. The video uses iconography from existing genres and previous videos to create a sense of fun and mockery. The video uses stereotypical imagery such as the blonde damsel in distress but then turns this on its head with use of humor.
