Evaluation

Music Video Evaluation
I chose the song DOA (Dead on arrival) by the Foo Fighters because I believed the lyrics and the name of the song would be easy to put some form of dialogue towards. My video consists of a variation of band footage, filmed from different angles focusing on the members in the band playing the song used in the video. This is mixed in within the narrative storyline of two individuals playing a card game that gets out of hand resorting to a humerous gun fight until they finally die, moving them to a new location the first of which is Jaspers pub; unaware they have been sent to the same place, the first character appears in a work uniform - thinking he is safe from his newfound enemy decides to go with the new life he is given and gets to work as a waiter. The sceond character also appears unknowing of his location and that his enemy is nearby comes across a mens newspaper so decides to sit, relax and read. I included the newspaper because I belived it to be a typical convention of a rock music video in the way it represented the female gender, aswell as add humour to the scene.
The characters are then killed again and then transitioned to the basketball courts in collge where they begin to fight instantly shooting and shooting at eachother with very bad aim until they run out of ammunition; this causes them to come to terms with the fact that if they will have to live with eachother they must settle their differnces and get along thus ending the narrative. . My video is very rock orientated and the use of quick shot changes help keep up with the pace of the song. This is usually expected in a rock music video, this supported by my research; for example, Queens Of The Stone Age use band footage, fast paced shots, an action scene and sexually suggestive imagery - all of this is a representation of their band and what is seen as their style. Where as most of the Foo Fighters videos use humour over dramatic storyline or typical rock 'n' roll conventions to represent their own personalities; tha band members are usually seen playing duel rolls as comical characters and the instrumentalists of the video, In my own video I make reference to the Foo Fighter's videos by attempting do the same thing as a representation of the people used in my videos' own personalities. Of the videos that I analysed (Everlong by the Foo Fighters) uses similar conventions as my video mainly the use of humour in oppose to a strong narrative, there is narrative in there but at first not that easy to grasp, the editing particularly the transitioning of characters from scene to scene in relation to the story is similar to that of Everlong.
My print texts work accordingly with my video itself because they represent the band well and the general personality of the people in the band as does the video. My dvd cover portrays the bands type of music though the use of editing, the colors give the effect of seriousness as colors are generally associated with mood and the colors are dark so that represents that the music can be more mellow, relaxed, and serious but what is going on in the picture contrasts with the colors by adding humor into the situation. I also complted the indside of cover for a dvd box using several different pictures or the band members during differnt times taken throughout the day aswell as picutres taken of us when filming the video playing the instruments

In my advertisement print text i tried to keep it simple but intersting, i did this by recreating the image of the Evolutionairy chain by using the members of the band and then tried to make it more like the original picture by making ti black and white so that the focus is on the band members in the recognisable poses.
My video feedback showed that the audience were looking for a message or a well plotted narrative in the sotryline however they found it entertaining, as i have said though my video was meant to reffernce the Foo Fighters actual videos by having no message in them what so ever and include a breif storyline at the most focusing on band representation through humour and/or scenes of the band performing. I beleive if the audience was aware of this though before watching the video they would have understood the point of my video more and just watched for entertainment instead of storyline, I stand by my storyboarding ideas for my video however as i believed it was differnt and a change from having someone walk around looking depressed from differnt angles.
I used new media technologies throughout the my media coursework; the obvious things such as final cut express allowed me to make the video which took some practice but was graspped rather quickly, also photoshop was used for the editing of my pictures to produce the DVD cover prints. we were given time to practice with photoshop howeverbefore we began the course work, in that time i was able to learn basic editing skills to create these

There was also the use of less obvious new media products such as facebook or msn as it allowed me to contact the cast members of my video and arrange times for filming etc. The blog was used as a method of recording my work and ideas as I went along in the producing of my media coursework, it allowed me to update regularly and recive comments and send comments aswell as veiw other peoples blogs to inspire ideas for my own. Youtube was aslo regularly used in my video researching so that i could veiw examples of other music videos in the music genre i was choosing to relate too.
For the filming of the video I used Sont Hc51 digital camera and then for the still photos I used a Sony S950 digital camera.

In conclusion I have learned from my research and feedback that audiences identify with conventions in music videos appropriate to the genre of music they are listening too. This seems evident to me as most of the people who have viewed my video enjoyed it, how ever those who are not paricularly fond of the rock genre failed to understand the videos lack of story line or use of comedy. Therefore demontrating how each music genre has its own iconography which the audience engages with. People who listen to particular genres look for certain things they would expect in the video to gain entertainment.
