Evaluation

Music Video Evaluation
I chose the song DOA (Dead on arrival) by the Foo Fighters because I believed the lyrics and the name of the song would be easy to put some form of dialogue towards. My video consists of a variation of band footage, filmed from different angles focusing on the members in the band playing the song used in the video. This is mixed in within the narrative storyline of two individuals playing a card game that gets out of hand resorting to a humerous gun fight until they finally die, moving them to a new location the first of which is Jaspers pub; unaware they have been sent to the same place, the first character appears in a work uniform - thinking he is safe from his newfound enemy decides to go with the new life he is given and gets to work as a waiter. The sceond character also appears unknowing of his location and that his enemy is nearby comes across a mens newspaper so decides to sit, relax and read. I included the newspaper because I belived it to be a typical convention of a rock music video in the way it represented the female gender, aswell as add humour to the scene.
The characters are then killed again and then transitioned to the basketball courts in collge where they begin to fight instantly shooting and shooting at eachother with very bad aim until they run out of ammunition; this causes them to come to terms with the fact that if they will have to live with eachother they must settle their differnces and get along thus ending the narrative. . My video is very rock orientated and the use of quick shot changes help keep up with the pace of the song. This is usually expected in a rock music video, this supported by my research; for example, Queens Of The Stone Age use band footage, fast paced shots, an action scene and sexually suggestive imagery - all of this is a representation of their band and what is seen as their style. Where as most of the Foo Fighters videos use humour over dramatic storyline or typical rock 'n' roll conventions to represent their own personalities; tha band members are usually seen playing duel rolls as comical characters and the instrumentalists of the video, In my own video I make reference to the Foo Fighter's videos by attempting do the same thing as a representation of the people used in my videos' own personalities. Of the videos that I analysed (Everlong by the Foo Fighters) uses similar conventions as my video mainly the use of humour in oppose to a strong narrative, there is narrative in there but at first not that easy to grasp, the editing particularly the transitioning of characters from scene to scene in relation to the story is similar to that of Everlong.
My print texts work accordingly with my video itself because they represent the band well and the general personality of the people in the band as does the video. My dvd cover portrays the bands type of music though the use of editing, the colors give the effect of seriousness as colors are generally associated with mood and the colors are dark so that represents that the music can be more mellow, relaxed, and serious but what is going on in the picture contrasts with the colors by adding humor into the situation. I also complted the indside of cover for a dvd box using several different pictures or the band members during differnt times taken throughout the day aswell as picutres taken of us when filming the video playing the instruments

In my advertisement print text i tried to keep it simple but intersting, i did this by recreating the image of the Evolutionairy chain by using the members of the band and then tried to make it more like the original picture by making ti black and white so that the focus is on the band members in the recognisable poses.
My video feedback showed that the audience were looking for a message or a well plotted narrative in the sotryline however they found it entertaining, as i have said though my video was meant to reffernce the Foo Fighters actual videos by having no message in them what so ever and include a breif storyline at the most focusing on band representation through humour and/or scenes of the band performing. I beleive if the audience was aware of this though before watching the video they would have understood the point of my video more and just watched for entertainment instead of storyline, I stand by my storyboarding ideas for my video however as i believed it was differnt and a change from having someone walk around looking depressed from differnt angles.
I used new media technologies throughout the my media coursework; the obvious things such as final cut express allowed me to make the video which took some practice but was graspped rather quickly, also photoshop was used for the editing of my pictures to produce the DVD cover prints. we were given time to practice with photoshop howeverbefore we began the course work, in that time i was able to learn basic editing skills to create these

There was also the use of less obvious new media products such as facebook or msn as it allowed me to contact the cast members of my video and arrange times for filming etc. The blog was used as a method of recording my work and ideas as I went along in the producing of my media coursework, it allowed me to update regularly and recive comments and send comments aswell as veiw other peoples blogs to inspire ideas for my own. Youtube was aslo regularly used in my video researching so that i could veiw examples of other music videos in the music genre i was choosing to relate too.
For the filming of the video I used Sont Hc51 digital camera and then for the still photos I used a Sony S950 digital camera.

In conclusion I have learned from my research and feedback that audiences identify with conventions in music videos appropriate to the genre of music they are listening too. This seems evident to me as most of the people who have viewed my video enjoyed it, how ever those who are not paricularly fond of the rock genre failed to understand the videos lack of story line or use of comedy. Therefore demontrating how each music genre has its own iconography which the audience engages with. People who listen to particular genres look for certain things they would expect in the video to gain entertainment.

Album Cover Powerpoint

Everlong Video Analaysis

Everlong

Everlong is a song written by the Foo Fighters a band that has grown more and more popular with each album release to the point where people recognize some songs yethave no familiarity with the band. Everlong is a very popular song amongst fans of the Foo Fighters; the song was released as part of the album “The Colour and the Shape”.

The Video features Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins posing as a happily married couple along with Nate Mendel and Pat Smear playing the part as two villains dressed as teddy boys. Dave plays as the man and Taylor dressed in drag is posing as the woman. The video represents mostly a plot-based storyline with several references to films and celebrities e.g. The Evil Dead, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen; the video is also a good representation of the bands personality and humor; they don’t so much like to be serious in their videos.

The video starts with the two villains approaching a house where Dave and Taylor lie in bed sleeping before the viewers enter the characters dreams into their dreams. The dreams are filmed in saturated colours where as the “reality” is filmed in black and white; this is unusual as in most editing it would be done the other way, however this helps the viewers differentiate between the dreams and reality scenes.
In Dave’s dream we see him at what appears to be a house party dressed as a punk, Dave’s dream shows aggression that we would expect to see in a rock video this is shown by his encounter with the two ill-intentioned teddy boys (Pat and Nate) bullying his “girlfriend”, Dave then becomes enraged, forcing his hand to swell to an enormous size using it to beat up the two villains, this is timed so that the physical violence is in time with the chorus demonstrating emotion as well as displaying humor.

The Video the transits over to Taylor’s dream where we see “her” in a log cabin deep in the forest whilst Dave is out collecting fire wood. The villains from Dave’s dream cross over into Taylors dream and start trying to attack the house. The video uses iconography from existing genres and previous videos to create a sense of fun and mockery. The video uses stereotypical imagery such as the blonde damsel in distress but then turns this on its head with use of humor.

Go With The Flow Video Analaysis

Go With The Flow

Video Analysis Research

Go with the flow is a popular and easily recognizable song created by Queens Of The Stone Age. The video strongly represents the rock genre, the male gender and also the bands personal style of “sleaze”, It does this through the use of women guitars and fast cars, stereotypically the basic desires in every male mind. The fact that the band is playing their instruments through out the video is typical convention of a rock video and it also represents the genre, giving off the sense of aggression given off by most rock videos. The producer uses cell shaded cartoon animation through out the entire video giving the ability to make it interesting and stylish.

It begins with the band driving a truck through a desert road in Mexico; the bands guitar based instrumentalist (Josh Homme, Troy Van Leeuwan, and Nick Oliveri) playing music in the back and the drummer (Dave Grohl) in the passenger seat next too Mark Lanegan the driver, the camera frequently displays the mile gauge when ever the song or the bass line picks up speed.

The video sticks to a strict colour scheme of red, white and black; setting a particular mood throughout the video – the video’s designers were inspired by Frank Miller’s Sin City, this will be recognizable to the audience and is being used as a way to engage the audience. The camera movement switches onto josh homes eyes and teeth several times where as you cant see any facial features of the other band members in less its them who is the main focus of the shot, for example when Troy is doing a solo riff or when Mark’s driving is the focus. Though you mainly see Josh’s eyes through out the video, this is likely because he is the lead singer/guitarist of the band so his face is more or less the main focus of the video. He also has a noticeably more varied contrast on his clothes with more white areas then any other members of the band; this draws the viewer’s attention towards him. All of the people in the video are shaded in black, however the woman in the video is shaded in red, this is due to the colour red resembling something that is hot and is commonly associated as a “sexy” colour. The woman in the video is used to make the video seem more attractive and sexy, but at the same time represents the sexual objectification of women for the sake of voyeurism (the pleasure of looking) as is demonstrated in most music videos of this genre and particularly the hip, hop genre.

About half way through the video we are introduced to another car driven by Mexican Wrestlers, this matches the mise en scene as it is based in the desert back roads of Mexico. We see them driving at high speeds in the direction of the car driven by the band. Before the two cars collide to give the effect o the incredible speeds we see a quick variation of shots from the two cars, getting closer and closer at different angles, the drivers of the other car and then finally Josh’s eyes right before they go into a slow motion cut scene of josh and the woman about to kiss, representing the two cars colliding; the art on the fronts of the car merging together into one shape right before a tidal wave of colour fills the screen. Displaying random 70’s style “trippy” images to emphasize the songs finale and whilst looking stylish and sexy. The video is brought to a close by the bands car burst out of the colour leaving a trail of fire as they drive into a giant yellow sun.

Music Video Planning

Ideas for video

Video

• Table and chairs set up in the college car park
• Distant shot of me and another person sat at a table in the college car park
• The camera angle mid shot of me from the table height followed by mid shot of person sat opposite at same angle
• Shot of guitarist/singers mouth singing the words in sync with the song to be played over the top followed by shot of him strumming the guitar also in sync
• Switches back to shot of the people at the table Distant shot
• I flip the table and we pull out guns aimed at each other and begin speaking, with shot reverse shot. Random and irrelevant subtitling will be included in all the scenes involving speech
• Characters then suddenly move into different areas shooting at each other or having an “argument”
• Then the camera will be slowly turned upside down giving the idea that the world is upside down, close ups of the characters in cover may be used or just several long shots and double mid shots, characters then whilst fighting begin to lose balance ect until finally falling backwards or they’ve shot each other, scene will constantly change from band who are also upside down during this scene
• Shot then focuses on bassist and guitarist as they are in the next scene
• The next two characters in a double shot sat at a table on a train playing cards
• Camera zooms out with song whilst focused on the two playing cards, then other two characters fall into screen and then sit down and begin playing cards as well. Random subtitles used through out or one character falls in front of doors and gets up then walks over to the other two characters all mid shot, asks for a news paper, one of the characters rudely allows him to have the paper (shot reverse shot) so he sits down whilst they play cards, other character then stumbles out of the toilet and walks over leaning on the chairs (upward angle mid shot), his enemy sees him and pulls out a gun again and in return the character stood up pulls out a gun (shot reverse shot), the two characters playing cards casually watch until the other one realizes his opponent was cheating (double mid shot) they both pulls guns on each other too, then as the chorus of the song begins the camera again starts to turn upside down (long shot) the characters all begin shooting at each other again (shot reverse shot)continuously switching scenes from band and video then when chorus ends all the characters fall out of the screen and land in a new place (basket ball courts of college or anywhere else that is better at the time) they all look at each other in confusion (shot reverse shot at long shot) then the two starting characters pick up guns whilst the card playing characters look at each other (shot reverse shot) and run (long shot of all characters) whilst the main characters have one last shoot out, before the other too acquire guns from unknown places and start shooting at the main characters (shot reverse shot again), main characters turn and shoot back (double shot) all characters are walking towards each other whilst getting shot (shot reverse shot and over the shoulder) before running out of ammunition and looking at each other (shot reverse shot over the shoulder) before a group embrace ending in time with the song (long shot possibly zooming out). Vide footage will be shot in black and white where as band footage will be in colour.

Target audience

The video would be aimed at the teenage age group, maybe those that are entertained by action films hence the fighting etc, gender related target audience would be men and women however men are known more to be entertained by pointless violence so men might be more entertained than women

Music introduction

Music Video

I have chosen to produce a music video over a soap, film and tv drama as I believe it would be easier and because the other options are less appealing to me as they would require scripted dialogue and acting capabilities, and allow me to be more creative, as I get to put my ideas to a favourite song and attempt to create full video. I enjoy music and watching professional music videos and how they represent each genre and how they attract their target audience; for example the foo fighters reach their target audience through the use of rock n roll culture i.e. guitars, drums, loud heavy music, band representation and rock n roll style, where as artists such as Jay-Z would reach his target audience through gang and street culture, representing himself with expensive designer clothes and jewellery. Both of these artists are more aimed at the male audience however their music is enjoyed by both genders.
